Shaw Middle School officially dedicated

Bobby Shaw Middle School was officially dedicated recently with a heart felt ceremony that honored the life of Musician Second Class Robert “Bobby” Shaw, a 1940 Pasadena High School graduate, who tragically lost his life on the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Shaw’s family and classmates were among the many guests who attended the dedication which featured a presentation of colors by the South Houston High School Navy ROTC Color Guard, singing from Pasadena High School choir members, music from the Shaw choir, band, and orchestra and guest speakers.

Pasadena ISD Superintendent Kirk Lewis expressed his gratitude to Bobby Shaw and his family.

“The freedom that we have comes at a price and Bobby Shaw made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. For that, we say thank you,” Lewis said.

Board of Trustees President Marshall Kendrick echoed Lewis’ sentiments. “Bobby Shaw has helped shape the lives of our children and the individuals who will carry on the spirit of courage and freedom,” Kendrick said.

Pasadena Mayor Johnny Isbell also surprised guests with a proclamation declaring Dec. 4, 2008 as Bobby Shaw Day.

“It is my distinct pleasure to be here tonight to celebrate the life of Bobby Shaw,” Isbell said.

Shaw Principal Liz Ortiz described the school’s namesake as “an example of how one life can touch so many.”

Ortiz also gave special thanks to her devoted staff and the community who helped build the school. “Without my staff and everyone’s cooperation none of this would be possible,” she said.

Construction of the building was funded by a bond issue approved by district voters in 2004.  The campus, which opened Sept. 29, serves fifth and sixth grade students living in the Mae Smythe Elementary, Pomeroy Elementary, South Shaver Elementary, and Morales Elementary attendance zones.
