Bailey Elementary School’s Karyn Johnson
and South Houston Intermediate School’s Laura Gomez were recently
named Pasadena ISD’s Region 4 Principals of the Year.
Region 4 began the Principal of the Year
program in 2001, allowing each district in the area to select an
elementary and secondary principal of the year.
Johnson and Gomez were nominated because of
their focus of high expectations for all students, their vision,
and focus and establishing a culture of support for students and
staff on their campuses.
“Both Karyn and Laura inspire their
students and staff,” said Vicki Thomas, Pasadena ISD’s deputy
superintendent. “They focus on the needs of every student and
are continually searching for new ways to help continually
improve student performance.”
Johnson has served as Bailey Elementary’s
principal since 1994. Thomas describes her as “a highly
collaborative leader that knows and understands the needs of her
students, staff and community.”
In September 2008, Bailey was named a
recognized campus by the Texas Education Agency.
“Throughout Karyn’s years of service at
Bailey Elementary she has earned the respect of the community
and has led the campus to solid, sustained academic success,”
Thomas said. “Her efforts have created a family atmosphere where
staff enjoys coming to work, students feel nurtured, safe and
productive and parents are partners with the school in their
child's education. Karyn is a quiet leader who works diligently
to inspire and support students on a daily basis.”
Gomez is in her third year as principal of
South Houston Intermediate School. Through her leadership and
providing her staff with the support and educational tools, the
campus has made double digit gains in science and significant
progress in all other academic areas.
“Laura has created a culture of high
expectations for every student and makes sure that each student
knows they are valued,” Thomas said. “Her passion and love for
learning transcends to all who have the privilege to work with
her and learn from her. She cares deeply for and feels
privileged to serve the community and the children. Laura is a
tireless worker and possesses outstanding instructional
leadership skills that are propelling her campus to outstanding
achievement in all areas.”
In recognition of their efforts, Johnson
and Gomez will be honored as the district’s Region 4 Elementary
and Secondary Principals of the Year at a special ceremony.
“We believe these two principals have
demonstrated their outstanding leadership qualities over time
and have made an outstanding contribution not only within their
campus but throughout the community,” Thomas said.
