United
States Air Force Second Lt. Ruben Ihuit recently addressed the Texan
Battalion JROTC members at Sam Rayburn High School educating them on the
various college opportunities in the Air Force.
Students got the opportunity to hear about the experiences of what the
United States Air Force Academy is like from someone who was once in
their shoes, since Lt. Ihuit is a 2003 Sam Rayburn graduate. Upon
graduating from high school, he entered the United States Air Force
Academy Prep School and graduated in July 2003.
In June 2004, Ihuit entered the United States Air Force Academy. Within
his squadron, he held a variety of leadership positions including
Element Leader, Standardization/ Evaluation Officer and Flight
Commander. He also participated in Academy programs such as the Chess
Club, Jump and Brevet Lieutenant Deployed Ops. He also was a member of
the Academy’s boxing team for three years.
Ihuit graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in May 2008
with a bachelor’s degree in astronautic engineering with a focus in
satellite design.
“The United States Air Force Academy changed my life and gave me an
opportunity to go to school,” he said.
Ihuit said he is passionate about raising potential student awareness
about the United States Air Force Academy.
“I enjoy going to different high schools to talk to students, because
it’s important for them to know all the options they have before they
graduate from high school,” he said.
Students and staff asked Ihuit several questions about his Air Force
experiences. “When they see these students from their own neighborhood
that did it, it’s proof that they can do it,” said retired Lt. Col. Alan
Mooneyham, Rayburn’s JROTC instructor.
At the end of the presentation, Ihuit was given the Texan Battalion
patch for honorary members from the Sam Rayburn JROTC unit. Ihuit is
currently an admissions advisor in the Diversity Recruiting Office at
the United States Air Force Academy for the Midwest and Southwest
Regions of the United States. Upon completion of this special duty
assignment, he will join the 46th Test Wing as a developmental research
and testing engineer at the Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. |
