Despite Hurricane Ike’s attempt to disrupt the Pasadena Rodeo
Art Contest, many Pasadena ISD students pulled through with
fantastic works of art.
Sergio Rangel of Pasadena Memorial High School was the top
winner, earning Best of Show honors and a $1,000 scholarship. He
is a senior at Memorial and was sponsored by his teacher, Victor
Raygoza.
In the high school division, Memorial also had students take the
top three spots. Helen Schorsch took first place for her
artwork, while Candelo Botello earned second place honors and
Eric Reyes captured third place. South Houston High School’s
Ernesto Salazar was given a fourth place award for his work.
Fred Perkins is Salazar’s teacher.
Artists from Almarosa Umanzor’s class South Houston Elementary
School took the spotlight. In the pre-kindergarten through
second grade category, South Houston students took the top two
spots as first grader Carol Hernandez won first place and Mady
Vela took second. The third through fifth grade category
included South Houston’s Julio Razo capturing first place, with
his classmates Angel Ruiz taking second and Sofia Davila
finishing with a fourth place ribbon. Martin Saenz of Morris
Middle School took second place in the competition. Saenz’s
teacher is Rhonda Ray.
Wesley Schoppe of Joyce Koska’s art class at Thompson
Intermediate captured first place honors in the sixth through
eighth grade division. Julio Montano of Queens Intermediate
earned second place in the contest. Deborah Buckley is Montano’s
teacher.
Koska also had another student place in the intermediate school
division as Christine Nguyen took third place. Adrian Taylor of
Jeanne Roddy’s art class at Morris Middle School was awarded
fourth place.
