Artists take top honors at Pasadena Rodeo contest

Despite Hurricane Ike’s attempt to disrupt the Pasadena Rodeo Art Contest, many Pasadena ISD students pulled through with fantastic works of art.

Sergio Rangel of Pasadena Memorial High School was the top winner, earning Best of Show honors and a $1,000 scholarship. He is a senior at Memorial and was sponsored by his teacher, Victor Raygoza.

In the high school division, Memorial also had students take the top three spots. Helen Schorsch took first place for her artwork, while Candelo Botello earned second place honors and Eric Reyes captured third place. South Houston High School’s Ernesto Salazar was given a fourth place award for his work. Fred Perkins is Salazar’s teacher.

Artists from Almarosa Umanzor’s class South Houston Elementary School took the spotlight. In the pre-kindergarten through second grade category, South Houston students took the top two spots as first grader Carol Hernandez won first place and Mady Vela took second. The third through fifth grade category included South Houston’s Julio Razo capturing first place, with his classmates Angel Ruiz taking second and Sofia Davila finishing with a fourth place ribbon. Martin Saenz of Morris Middle School took second place in the competition. Saenz’s teacher is Rhonda Ray.

Wesley Schoppe of Joyce Koska’s art class at Thompson Intermediate captured first place honors in the sixth through eighth grade division. Julio Montano of Queens Intermediate earned second place in the contest. Deborah Buckley is Montano’s teacher.

Koska also had another student place in the intermediate school division as Christine Nguyen took third place. Adrian Taylor of Jeanne Roddy’s art class at Morris Middle School was awarded fourth place.
