Award-winning author visits Pasadena schools

Award-winning author Jordan Sonnenblick shared stories about his life, his love for writing and stressed how students should pursue their dreams when he visited several Pasadena ISD campuses during the month of October.

Sonnenblick spoke with students at Bondy Intermediate, Beverly Hills Intermediate and Rick Schneider Middle School.

Sonnenblick challenged the students to reach for their dreams. His main theme for the discussions were being happy as an adult. He said students should find something they are good at then pursue it in life. He shared that his own path to a fulfilling writing career was to just follow a dream.

The author told students how, as a teacher, he tried to find a book for a student with a very sick sibling. When he could not find the book, he simply wrote one to help the student through that difficult time. “I think it made them see an author in real life as a real person,” said Jennifer McGee, Bondy Intermediate librarian.

Sonnenblick is the Lone Star award winning author of “Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pies.” He won the award for a second time with “Notes from the Midnight Driver.” Both stories are written from a middle school boy’s point of view and use humor to capture students’ attention while dealing with serious issues at the same time.
