Houston Texans Owners Surprise Sam Rayburn Football Program with $20,000 Grant

PASADENA, Texas — On Monday, October 6, 2025, the Sam Rayburn High School Football Program received an unforgettable surprise when representatives from the Houston Texans, including team owners Mr. and Mrs. McNair, awarded the team a $20,000 “Grow the Game” grant in celebration of the Texans organization’s Founder’s Day.
The grant, designed to support youth football programs across the state of Texas, came after Athletic Coordinator and head football coach Sergio Gonzalez submitted a written proposal to the Houston Texans Foundation earlier this year. Gonzalez was pleasantly surprised that a simple request for shoulder pads and cleats could lead to something much greater. Months later, he received an invitation to formally apply for the “Grow the Game” grant.
“We’re gonna use it for a lot of our everyday stuff,” said head coach Sergio Gonzalez. “We’re gonna get some new athletic gear, some new helmets, new shoulder pads. We’re working on doing some signage out on our field. But most impostantly we just want people to know that we’re here.”
The $20,000 grant will provide essential resources to the Rayburn football program, ensuring that our student-athletes have access to high-quality equipment. This surprise visit from the McNairs, along with several Houston Texans representatives, made the moment even more memorable for all our athletes and all attendees.
The celebration continued with personalized autographs from former Texans players and cheerleaders, and a special autograph by the team’s mascot, Toro.
Coach Gonzalez, who has led the program for four years, shared his final thought on this grant's lasting impact.
“It gives the kids a sense of home, a sense of pride in what we do,” Gonzalez said. “When they get here and they have nice things, we’re taking care of them with top of the line equipment. They know that we care about them.”
“It's heartwarming to come out and see the kids, and that’s what it’s all about for us,” said Cal McNair. “It was the same for my parents, and Hannah and I really bought into it. These are wonderful high school kids, and we try to support them and give them their best opportunity. It’s wonderful to do something for this community. ”
The Grow the Game initiative is part of the Houston Texans’ ongoing commitment to youth sports and community development throughout the region.
