Mission Forward Listening Circles: What We're Hearing

What We're Hearing
As part of Mission Forward, Pasadena ISD is listening to parents, employees and community members about what they value, what challenges they see, and what they believe we should consider as we plan for the future.
These conversations are one part of the Mission Forward process. The perspectives shared through the listening circles will be considered alongside district data and other information to help shape the options and recommendations that move forward. While the listening circles are not a vote or final decision, what we hear will meaningfully inform the work ahead. They help us better understand the experiences and priorities of the people we serve.
Across the listening circles, several common themes are beginning to emerge.
Our People Are Our Greatest Strength
One message came through clearly: people are at the heart of Pasadena ISD.
Families talked about teachers and staff who know their children, administrators who respond when they need help, and schools where they feel welcome. Employees also talked about the relationships and sense of family that have long been part of Pasadena ISD.
As we plan for the future, we need to protect those relationships and the sense of belonging people value.
We Have Great Opportunities, but They Need to Be Easier to Reach
People talked proudly about the many opportunities Pasadena ISD provides students, from academics and fine arts to athletics, career programs, technology and other student experiences.
We also heard that having an opportunity is not always the same as being able to access it.
Families may not know a program exists, understand how to get started, or may have other barriers that make participation difficult.
That means we need to ask more than:
Do we offer it?
We also need to ask:
Can our students and families actually get to it?
Families Need a Clearer Roadmap
Pasadena ISD has a lot to offer, but it can sometimes be difficult for families to see the whole picture.
Families should be able to easily understand:
- What opportunities are available now?
- What will be available later?
- What does my child need to do?
- Where is the program offered?
- Who can help us?
Sometimes we do not need another program. We need to do a better job helping families find and understand the opportunities we already have.
Every Student Needs a Path Forward
Success after high school does not look the same for every student.
Some students will attend a four-year university. Others may pursue a two-year degree, technical training, a certification, skilled trade, military service, entrepreneurship or employment.
Our job is not to put every student on the same road.
Our job is to help every student find a road forward.
That also means giving students opportunities to explore their interests and possibilities earlier.
Our Employees Need Support, Too
Our employees make these opportunities possible.
We heard pride in Pasadena ISD's history of supporting and developing its people. We also heard concerns about workload, staffing and uncertainty during times of change.
How our employees experience Pasadena ISD has a direct impact on how our students and families experience our schools.
As we think about what more we can provide students, we also need to ask whether our employees have the people, time, training and support to make it successful.
Pasadena May Need to Look Different in the Future
People understand that enrollment, resources and student needs are changing.
The listening circles included questions and ideas about staffing, programs, facilities, boundaries and how schools might be organized differently in the future. These were important parts of the conversation, and the perspectives shared will help inform the options and recommendations considered throughout the Mission Forward process.
Mission Forward gives us an opportunity to step back and ask:
What do our students need for the future, and how should our schools, people and programs work together to provide it?
Listening is part of answering that question. Enrollment, financial, facilities, staffing and program data will also help guide the work.
Communication Matters
People understand that difficult decisions may be part of planning for the future.
What they want is clear, honest and timely communication.
That means being open about:
- What we know
- What we do not know yet
- What is being considered
- What has been decided
- Why change may be needed
- When people can expect answers
We may not always have an immediate answer, but we can be clear about where we are in the process.
Listening Is Only the Beginning
We appreciate the parents, employees and community members who have been willing to share their experiences, concerns and ideas.
Now it is important that people see what happens with what we heard.
As Mission Forward continues, the feedback gathered through the listening circles will be considered alongside district data and other information to help shape the options, recommendations and decisions that move forward.
They provide valuable insight into the priorities, experiences and concerns we must consider as we evaluate options and make decisions for the future of Pasadena ISD.
What We're Taking Forward
Protect what makes Pasadena special.
Our people, relationships and sense of belonging.
Make opportunities easier to reach.
Help students and families understand what is available and how to get there.
Plan for the Pasadena of tomorrow.
Make sure our schools, programs and resources match the needs of our students and community.
Bring people along.
Listen, communicate clearly, and explain the decisions we make.
Moving Mission Forward
This work is not about keeping everything exactly the way it has always been.
It is about taking an honest look at where Pasadena ISD is today, understanding where we need to go, and making thoughtful decisions about how we get there.
Move Pasadena forward without losing what makes Pasadena special.
