Gene "Bean" McCarley was a standout basketball player at Pasadena High School in the 1950s before starring at Baylor University. In his 1955 senior year, he led the Houston area in scoring, guided Pasadena to a district co-title, and earned Second-Team All-State honors. After a collegiate career at Baylor where he captained the team, McCarley returned to Pasadena as a basketball coach. He coached at both Pasadena High and Dobie High before retiring in 1995. In 2014, he was posthumously inducted into the Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame.
