Weldon "Stoney" Phillips was a legendary figure in Pasadena ISD athletics, serving first as the head football coach at Pasadena High and then as the district's first athletic director starting in 1957. In this role, he was instrumental in developing athletic programs for the district's three new high schools and spearheaded the construction of new facilities, including the Veterans Memorial Stadium complex. 

His legacy is commemorated by the Weldon "Stoney" Phillips Field House, the central gymnasium in the district. Phillips is also a member of the halls of honor for the Texas High School Coaches Association and the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association, having led the latter as president. He passed away in 1997.
