School Social Workers are school-community liaisons. They are trained mental health professions, that work with parents/guardians to facilitate their support in their children's school adjustment. Social workers alleviate family stress to enable the child to function more effectively in school and the community. They assist parents to access programs available to students with special needs, and in accessing and utilizing school and community resources. Social workers coordinate systems of care to provide wrap around services, and help students and families receive adequate support form social and mental health agencies. Social workers can also help identify and report child abuse and neglect.
The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.
