Pasadena, TX – October 18, 2024 –In a heartfelt tribute filled with emotions and a true sense of Pasadena pride, the Pasadena Independent School District dedicated the press box at Veterans Memorial Stadium to the late Robert Avery during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Avery, a longtime sportswriter for the Pasadena Citizen, passed away earlier this year, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and passion for local sports.
Known for his detailed and heartfelt coverage, Avery highlighted the achievements of young athletes, often sharing their personal stories and the hard work behind their successes.
Avery’s dedication to youth sports in Pasadena ISD grew as he became a mentor and advocate, capturing the community spirit and the importance of sports for young student-athletes.
Avery’s commitment to his craft and genuine care for the athletes he covered earned him a special place in the hearts of many in the Pasadena community.
The dedication, held on Oct. 18 during the Dobie vs. South Houston football game at the district’s Veterans Memorial Stadium, was attended by students, faculty, alumni, community members, and many of Avery’s closest relatives. They celebrated Avery’s contributions to the district and his unwavering support for its athletes.
Avery, who covered countless games throughout the Pasadena area over his 32-year career, was a true unsung hero. Beyond writing, he gave back through mentorship, guidance, and being a positive figure for many individuals in Pasadena ISD.
The community came together to honor Avery by renaming the press box at Veterans Memorial Stadium to the Robert Avery Press Box.
Robert Avery’s family was deeply moved by the tribute. During the dedication ceremony, they expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the community’s recognition of Avery’s contributions.
“This was amazing, we truly appreciate this dedication, and it means so much to us that his love for Pasadena ISD is appreciated. We thank y’all for this fantastic celebration of my uncle’s legacy,” said niece Heather Mayes.
This dedication serves as a lasting reminder of Avery’s impact on the community and his unwavering support for Pasadena ISD’s student-athletes.
“Robert Avery was a true journalist, fair and balanced, who painted pictures with words. He was so well known through generations here in Pasadena. He and I could sit and talk for hours about sports and journalism,” said longtime friend and Director of Communications Art Del Barrio.
Avery’s impact was further highlighted by the game’s announcer as the ceremony came to a close.
“He spent many nights at this stadium, at this field - chronicling the stories that are embedded in many students’ hearts and memories. Some of you may have his articles clipped in scrapbooks with his words taking you down memory lane.”
Overall, Avery believed that no matter the level, all athletes deserved recognition, and he was their voice, who continues to inspire current and future generations in Pasadena.
