Pasadena Memorial senior Rangel Guzman wins Tommy Tune Award for ‘Matilda,’ advances to Jimmy Awards

Pasadena, TX — As a senior at Pasadena Memorial High School, Rangel Guzman has already achieved what many young performers only dream of: earning top recognition as a Tommy Tune Award Winner for his performance in Matilda.
Now a Jimmy Awards Nominee, Guzman’s accomplishment advances him to the national stage and places him among the nation’s top high school musical theater performers.
Guzman portrayed Miss Trunchbull in his school’s production of Matilda, delivering a performance that secured his win in the Houston-area program. Hosted by Theatre Under the Stars, the Tommy Tune Awards recognize excellence in high school musical theater and serve as a pathway to national competition.

He will advance to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, known as the Jimmy Awards, scheduled for June 22, 2026, at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City.
As Guzman heads into a new stage of life, he is preparing to continue his training at the University of Michigan, where he will pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theater.
“I’m going to the University of Michigan for my BFA in musical theater. It’s always been my dream school, and then, throughout the grueling college audition process, I ended up just landing right where I belonged,” Guzman said.
The Tommy Tune Awards program annually recognizes student performers across the Houston region, with winners selected for their talent, dedication and stage presence. Those chosen to advance to the Jimmy Awards participate in a week of coaching and workshops before performing on a Broadway stage.
Guzman’s recognition reflects both his individual achievement and the opportunities available to students in Pasadena ISD as he prepares to take his next steps from a high school stage to Broadway.
