During his high school years at Dobie, Matt Wingo earned a reputation as the versatile star of the football team, recognized for his skill in multiple positions. With two years on the varsity squad, Wingo exemplified the essence of football, showcasing his abilities in running, tackling, and kicking.

In 1985, as a junior, Wingo played a pivotal role in Dobie's 12-1 record and regional semifinals appearance, contributing significantly to their victory over La Marque with an interception. His skills as both a linebacker and punter earned him first-team all-district honors in his junior and senior years, along with a spot on the All-Greater Houston team during his senior season. Additionally, his effectiveness as a bruising running back often went unnoticed, as he consistently challenged opposing defensive backs.

Beyond football, Wingo showcased his athletic prowess in track, excelling in the discus throw and shot put, further attracting the attention of college recruiters who admired his tenacity and versatility on the field.

Transitioning to college, Wingo focused on excelling as a linebacker for Texas Tech, where he became one of the most prolific tacklers in the university's history. Over his four-year career, he accumulated an impressive 385 tackles, showcasing his ability to dominate the field from sideline to sideline. Wingo's achievements didn't end with tackles; he also made significant contributions to the team's success, including leading the Red Raiders to victory in the All-American Bowl during his sophomore year and breaking up seven passes as a junior, the most among South West Conference linebackers.

His leadership qualities were recognized during his senior year when he received the Darrell Royal Leadership Award and was chosen as team captain by his peers, in addition to winning the Dell Morgan Memorial Courage Award. Throughout his junior and senior seasons, Wingo was named first-team All-SWC linebacker.

Even after three decades, Wingo's contributions to Texas Tech remain appreciated, culminating in his induction into the Red Raiders' Athletics Hall of Fame last year. Following his collegiate career, Wingo pursued a professional football career, signing with the Denver Broncos as a free agent and competing during the preseason.
