Woodward, Walter
HOF Class of 2016
Walter Woodard was a beloved figure and "the greatest fan" in Pasadena ISD history. From the late 1950s to the late 1990s, he was a fixture at local sporting events, where he offered encouragement, barked strategy, and entertained crowds. In 2008, he was honored by the district as "Coach of the Year" for his unwavering support.
Woodard attended Mae Smythe Elementary, San Jacinto Intermediate, and graduated from Sam Rayburn High School in 1966. His influence was widespread, and in 1973, he was named the honorary coach of the Pasadena Colt League All-Star team that advanced to the World Series.
Known affectionately as "Coach Walter" by generations of students, his presence was synonymous with Pasadena sports. He was also a community benefactor, leading cheers for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and helping with food drives.
After Woodard passed away in 2009 at age 62, the city of Pasadena and the Texas House of Representatives paid tribute to him. The Walter Woodard Toys for Tots Softball Tournament was named in his honor, and the tradition of local youth teams wearing his initials on their sleeves continues to this day.
