Allen, Bob

HOF Class of 2013

As a high school senior at South Houston in 1964, Bobby Allen transformed from a reserve player to a star, becoming the first First-Team All-State player in school history. Playing halfback, he rushed for 1,084 yards, only 55 yards less than future All-American Chris Gilbert. Allen showcased his explosiveness in a rout against Aldine, where he gained 174 yards on nine carries and scored four touchdowns. He also led the district in kickoff returns with an average of 36.4 yards per return.

Allen's remarkable senior season attracted nearly four dozen college scholarship offers. He ultimately signed with Texas Tech. There, he transitioned to wide receiver and led the Red Raiders in receiving in 1968, with 35 catches for 546 yards and four touchdowns. After a brief professional career with the Philadelphia Eagles, hampered by injuries, Allen became a successful businessman. He has since become a generous benefactor to the South Houston High football program, providing significant financial support. Allen considers South Houston High School a very important part of his life.
