Alumni Spotlight: Pouring INSPIRAtion Back Into the Community

Posted Date: 7/25/24 (5:45 PM)

This week, Pasadena Independent School District proudly presents Justin Valdez as our Alumni Spotlight.
We’re excited to reconnect with our alumni and learn more about their contributions to our community. Today, we delve into the story behind Inspira Coffee and its founder.

Justin, where did you attend school within Pasadena ISD, and how have you given back to the district?
I started at Pasadena Memorial as a new student to PISD. Though starting at a large school made me nervous, the impact was profound and enduring. Every day, my teachers and administrators taught me invaluable lessons that I still carry with me. As I crossed the graduation stage, I was determined to embody those teachings, challenge myself, and pursue my passions. That determination is why Inspira Coffee is thriving today.
Who would have imagined that Pasadena Memorial High School would shape me into who I am today?

How long have you been in your current role, and what inspired you to open your own coffee shop?

We’ve been in business for over three years, navigating various challenges and finding joy in our daily operations. My initial goal was to show my wife, kids, and myself that with hard work, conviction, and perseverance, anything is possible. With a $20,000 loan, I aimed not just for financial success but to inspire change in the coffee industry, achieve personal goals, and foster community connections.
My passion for food and coffee was a bonus, but the real reward comes from seeing the joy and smiles when people experience our organic syrups and catering services.

What lessons from PISD have influenced your journey, and how have you applied them to your success?

As a misunderstood and troubled student seeking hope, I faced many challenges. However, the unwavering support from PMHS teachers like Mrs. Emmons and my psychology teacher guided me to where I am today. I wasn’t a bad student; I just needed guidance. Pasadena ISD provided that support, and it wasn’t my academic excellence but the praise for small achievements that changed my life.
This district instilled in me a deep sense of pride. I gained self-respect, discovered a spiritual connection, and ignited a passion that led me to where I am now.

Why did you choose to stay in the Pasadena area, and how have you contributed to the community? Can you also share some of the events you’ve participated in for PISD schools?

Emerging from a challenging background, I wanted to give back to the community that supported me. My goal was to enhance the culinary and coffee experiences in Pasadena, inspired by the area’s rich history.
When the idea of naming my truck ‘Inspira’ (from the Latin for ‘breathing love into inspirations’) came to me, it felt right to launch it here. Beyond coffee, my involvement in school events and interactions with school officials allows me to reinvest in the community. I’ve been present at various Pasadena ISD schools, churches, and district events, using these opportunities to share my story and express my pride in the district.

With the success you’ve achieved, what are your plans for the future?

My journey began with a FedEx truck, and witnessing the progress we've made over these three years fuels my ambition. Partnering with Motu Gas Station has opened new opportunities for expansion. My goal is to own a business that fully showcases my talents while remaining in Pasadena, where my journey started. Our current objective is to sell 100,000 cups per year. While ambitious, this goal is significant, especially as it allows me to reconnect with my hometown and former classmates.

As an alumnus, what advice would you give to current students?

Having once been in their shoes my advice is simple: embrace risks and pursue your dreams, no matter how difficult or far-fetched they may seem.
Who would have thought I’d be crafting unique drinks and creating organic syrups, revolutionizing the coffee experience every day?
Pasadena ISD taught me that I can achieve anything in this world. Becoming an entrepreneur was a crucial step in my journey.
As alumni like us continue to make an impact, current students can see our drive and understand why it matters—they’ll carry the torch of honor themselves one day.

Conversations with the Inspira team have reinforced that life is a canvas to create on. Pasadena ISD represents excellence, creativity, and innovation.
