Pasadena High School to host Annual “You Matter Walk”

PASADENA, Texas — More than 240 staff members at Pasadena High School will take to the streets Monday, August 11, 2025, for Pasadena High School’s fourth annual “You Matter Walk,” an effort aimed at improving student attendance and engagement ahead of the new school year.
The event brings together teachers, instructional aides, and administrators, who divide into small teams to visit students flagged for chronic absenteeism. Each team is trained with a script designed to foster connection and underscore the importance of showing up.
“Our message is clear: you matter, and we want you here,” said Principal Steven Friend. “When students know they’re missed and valued, it changes how they see themselves in school.”
Since the inaugural walk, Pasadena High School has seen steady attendance gains, rising from 83.17% in 2021–22 to 89.44% in 2023–24. This is a 6.27-point jump in just two years. Graduation rates are also climbing, with a 2.8% increase from last year, and dropout rates falling nearly by half—from 3.8% to 1.9%.
The success of the walk lies in its personal approach and full staff participation. Teams greet families with upbeat energy and clear communication about back-to-school expectations, the importance of education, and the impact it has on their lives.
“This isn’t just an event—it’s a tradition,” said Jessica Martinez, assistant principal. “It empowers students, strengthens relationships, and reminds our entire community that education is a shared commitment.”
